The four things that actually drive the price

  1. Radio content. Every additional radio and every additional frequency band adds test time. A dual-band Wi-Fi plus BLE plus cellular device is a fundamentally different project from a BLE tracker.
  2. Number of models. A family application can cover variants under one filing if the differences are electrical rather than RF-related. Poorly planned variant lists turn one project into five.
  3. Retesting. The single largest avoidable cost. A failed emissions scan means design work, new samples and repeat testing.
  4. Documentation quality. Incomplete schematics, missing BOM values or an absent test mode in firmware all translate into billable engineering hours.

Is FCC SDoC cheaper than FCC ID?

Yes. SDoC involves testing and a supplier's declaration with no filing to the FCC and no certification body fee, so it is typically the least expensive route. FCC ID adds TCB review and filing, and applies to any product with a radio transmitter.

Does using a pre-certified module reduce cost?

Usually, because transmitter testing may be eliminated. The host product still needs Part 15B emissions testing, and you should verify the module grant covers your antenna and installation before assuming the saving.

How can I avoid paying for retesting?

Run a pre-compliance scan, freeze the design before samples ship, and provide firmware with a test mode. Most retests trace back to design changes or an unrepresentative sample rather than to the lab.
