Ten restricted substances, 240+ SVHC candidates, and how to build a defensible compliance file instead of a folder of supplier promises.
RoHS 2.0 (Directive 2011/65/EU) restricts ten substances in electrical and electronic equipment: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and the brominated flame retardants PBB and PBDE, plus the four phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP. The limit is 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials, and 0.01% for cadmium.
REACH is separate and much broader: currently more than 240 substances of very high concern sit on the candidate list, and any article containing above 0.1% of a listed SVHC carries communication obligations.
Standard turnaround is 5–7 working days, with a 3-day rush option. Cost scales with the number of homogeneous materials submitted: a simple product with five materials is far cheaper than a complex assembly with eighty. Sending a well-prepared material list with the samples is the single biggest lever on both price and time.

RoHS 2.0 restricts ten substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP. Limits are 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials, except cadmium at 0.01%.
A supplier declaration is accepted in market surveillance practice as part of the technical file, but it is the weakest evidence. Buyers and authorities increasingly expect supporting test data, especially for high-risk materials such as PVC cables, solders and plastic housings.
RoHS restricts a specific list of substances in electrical and electronic equipment placed on the EU market. REACH is a broader chemical regulation covering all articles, with a candidate list of more than 240 substances of very high concern requiring communication in the supply chain above 0.1%.
Standard turnaround is 5–7 working days including XRF screening and any wet-chemistry confirmation. A 3-day rush service is available when the material list is simple.
RoHS is an EU market requirement, so it applies when the finished product is placed on the EU market. Many global buyers nonetheless require RoHS evidence from Chinese suppliers as a condition of purchase, and China has its own China RoHS marking requirements for products sold domestically.
