Quick answer: what RoHS restricts

RoHS 2.0 (Directive 2011/65/EU) restricts ten substances in electrical and electronic equipment: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and the brominated flame retardants PBB and PBDE, plus the four phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP. The limit is 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials, and 0.01% for cadmium.

REACH is separate and much broader: currently more than 240 substances of very high concern sit on the candidate list, and any article containing above 0.1% of a listed SVHC carries communication obligations.

How testing works

  1. Screening by XRF — fast, non-destructive screening of homogeneous materials for the metallic elements and bromine.
  2. Confirmation by wet chemistry — where screening is inconclusive or fails, samples go to ICP-OES / ICP-MS for metals and GC-MS for the organic flame retardants and phthalates.
  3. Homogeneous material decomposition — results are evaluated per material, not per product, so disassembly planning matters for cost.

Turnaround and cost drivers

Standard turnaround is 5–7 working days, with a 3-day rush option. Cost scales with the number of homogeneous materials submitted: a simple product with five materials is far cheaper than a complex assembly with eighty. Sending a well-prepared material list with the samples is the single biggest lever on both price and time.
